Are you a nomad?
Most likely your first thought will be no, but hold that thought for a moment.
Trendbubbles thinks you are a nomad, just like us.
Why? Let us explain on the basis of the work trend.
Nowadays almost everyone has one of either a smartphone, tablet or laptop.
These useful gadgets make it easy for us to work or communicate at anytime and anywhere we want.
In most of these cases we need an internet connection, but in the Netherlands (and many other countries) this should not be a big problem, because you can connect to a wifi signal almost anywhere.
Question yourself; do you use your gadget sometimes, or even often, at one of these locations:
- In the garden
- At the library
- On a camping
- In a hotel
- At the airport
- In a restaurant
- In the car
- At the movies
- At work
- In bed
- On the train
We bet you can come up with many more locations, but these are just examples.
No office needed anymore
The smartphone, laptop and tablet make us very flexible.
You don’t need your own desk or office to work anymore.
Most people can work anywhere and be more flexible with their work.
For some professions, like a farmer, this will be hard to imagine.
A farmer needs to milk his cows on time, everyday at the same place.
He can’t take his work anywhere with him
That is true, but even a farmer can make his work more flexible using today’s technology.
A few years ago a farmer couldn’t go on holiday because he had to take care of his cows, but we know a farmer who CAN go on holiday if he wants to.
He has a robot for milking and feeding the cows and even the cleaning of the barn is automatic.
He has cameras hanging everywhere so he can check up on his cows at any time.
He is able go on a 3 day trip with his family and regularly check the condition of the cows.
His neighbour stands by in case something is wrong or if a hand is needed somewhere.
A good example of this nomad’s working trend is Seats to Meet, where you can rent your flexible working space or conference room.
You can work there whenever you want to or need to.
Are you for instance finally finishing that book you wanted to write for a long time and you need the concentration, Seats to Meet is a great solution.
The advantage of a location like Seats to Meet is that you can get connected with other entrepreneurs, or ZZPers as we call them in The Netherlands (self-employed without employees).
Because of the need to be flexible, we unknowingly become nomads.
Different use of time
Not only are we more flexible with our working location but we also use our time differently.
The borders between leisure and working time are fading.
How often have you found yourself working in the evening, sitting in front of your television?
Our work has become more and more international and the need to travel has increased.
Travelling nowadays isn’t that expensive anymore; with a budget airline we can easily afford multiple citytrips per year.
If you are on one of these citytrips and there’s a meeting in the office, it’s possible to participate using Skype or Google Hangout, while you are at the other side of the world.
But don't forget: we have online meetings we can attend, we can study via internet, but real life social contact is something we can’t neglect.
So, as flexible as we are: real life social contact is for humans as water is for plants.
So, after reading this, what is your answer? Are you a nomad?
We are curious, so share your answers with us.
